Future of Commerce Report

Square released its second annual “Future of Commerce” report that reveals how retailers, restaurateurs – and for the first time, beauty businesses – continue to evolve and adapt their business models through the pandemic and whatever comes next.
Here are some insights:
  • 47% of retailers now offer buy online, pick up in-store (BOPIS).
  • Among retailers who sell on social media, the percentage of revenue that comes from each channel is as follows: Instagram 32%, Facebook 31%, Twitter 31% and TikTok 30%.
  • More than 25% of retailers say that not knowing enough about technology options/platforms keeps them from selling goods through newer online or social channels.

#ProQuote

“Commerce is constantly changing and we’re seeing that many of these changes are here to stay. Businesses that understand these shifts in consumer behavior can benefit by creating digital-first operations that prioritize the customer experience for enhanced brand loyalty and reputation.” – Alyssa Henry, Executive Vice President, Square

#MacroTrendSustainable Standard

The sustainability conversation is evolving as the intersecting crises of the past year unfold from a global pandemic, supply chain disruptions, to a climate breakdown, to name a few. The rise in tech-enabled innovations and the increasing importance of implementing systemic solutions make it clear that shifting consumer sentiment is just the start in our fight for climate action.
Here are some examples of how brands are addressing this:
  • Adidas hosted a one day pop-up shop offering custom, upcycled fashion
  • 52 fashion brands including ReformationNicholas Kirkwood, and Allbirds are certified carbon neutral today.
  • Gucci’s recent partnership with The RealReal and ThredUp’s various partnerships with companies like MadewellRent the Runway, and Farfetch signal the industry’s strong belief in the success of secondhand clothing.
  • Beauty brands are utilizing biomaterials like mycellium, the root system of fungi, to create sustainable packaging.
